The Governmentalities of Dictatorship – Panel at the IPSA 22nd World Congress

The IPSA 22nd World Congress of Political Science will take place from 8-12 July 2012. I will contribute to it by chairing a panel on the governmentalities of dictatorship.

Contemporary comparative research on Dictatorships is strongly focused on political regimes, institutions, mechanisms of power exertion, and the rational / public choice models. This research offers a richness of insights and data, that can be used for assessing Autocracies. But, as a consequence, individuals as objects and subjects to power are mostly neglected. The same applies to the interrelations of of politics and other spheres of transnationalising and technologising societies.
In order to intergate existing research into a broader strategy of understanding the logics of power and domination, it seems to be fruitful to use the methodological and theoretical richness of political and social sciences.
This panel intends to offer a platform of discussing especially post-structuralist and postmodernist methodological and theoretical approaches (e.g. from Foucault to Lyotard, from Chomsky to Baudrillard) for assessing the varieties of dictatorship. Both, papers focussing on theoretical reflection and on empirical results are welcome in order to gather a different view on the governmentalities of dictatorship.

There will be presentations and discussion ofsix papers:
  • “Biopolitics of Stalinism: Ideas and Bodies in Soviet Governmentality” by Dr. Sergei Prozorov
  • “Change and Continuity: China’s Economic Development and Discursive Politics” by
    Miss Sojeong Lee
  • “Discursive Power in the Cuban Revolution – “Politics of Discursivity” in Authoritarian Situations” by Mr. Victor Lagarde
  • “Governmentality and the Comparative Analysis of Dictatorship” by Dr. Rolf Frankenberger
  • “In Search of a “Usable Past”: Discourse about National Identity in Post-Soviet Russia”by Prof. Olga Malinova
  • and “Succession to Power as a Governmentalitiy Issue in the Twentieth Century’s Dictatorships”
    by Mr. Ariel D. Sribman

The panel will be on Wednesday, 11.July from 11- 12:45 at the School of journalism / Facultad de ciencas de la Informacion,  Comlutense University MAdrid, Room C209
